Assemblymember Harabedian’s Bill to Ensure MENA Data Inclusion Passes Senate Appropriations

SACRAMENTO, CA — Assemblymember John Harabedian (D-Pasadena) moved AB 91 (MENA Inclusion Act) through the Senate Appropriations Committee. This measure demonstrates the Assemblymember’s commitment to making sure the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) community is included in shaping public policy.
“Every policy decision relies on accurate data. For too long, the MENA community has been overlooked in decisions impacting their health, political engagement, and daily lives. This bill seeks to reflect California’s full diversity by requiring state agencies to meaningfully separate MENA individuals from the broad ‘White’ category, ensuring their unique experiences and needs are captured in demographic data,” said Assemblymember Harabedian.
The MENA Inclusion Act directs state agencies, boards, and commissions to list Middle Eastern and North African groups as distinct categories in demographic data, rather than grouping them under “White.” This change will provide more accurate data to guide equitable healthcare services, education funding, and civil rights enforcement.
The bill will now move to the Senate Floor for a vote in the coming weeks.
