Migration trends reverse: More Armenians returning than leaving in 2025
Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan presented details about emigration and migration statistics, emphasizing that the year 2025 has been a turning point.
For the first time in decades, more citizens entered the Republic of Armenia than left, highlighting a reversal in migration trends.
The statistics were first announced in January by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan
“During 2025, 5,201,747 individuals entered Armenia, while 5,171,270 individuals exited the country. These figures are exceptional compared to recent years for both Armenian citizens and foreigners. Since 2010, when we began specifically tracking migration inflows and outflows of Armenian citizens, this is the first time we see a completely different picture. As a result, we have recorded a positive net migration of 30,477. In this context, I consider it especially significant that the migration balance for Armenian citizens is again positive, at 8,660. I should note that, over the past 15 years, this is the first year in which the migration balance for Armenian citizens is positive. The only exception was in 2020, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and should therefore be considered an irregular situation,” said Arpine Sargsyan at a press briefing.
The minister emphasized that this marks the closing of the emigration window, with signs of growing return migration in Armenia’s migration landscape. According to the minister, this reflects the country’s internal security, Armenia’s efforts to achieve peace, and other positive changes that have occurred over recent years.
