Turkey’s Foreign Minister Warns Greece: “Don’t be a tool of those who want instability.”

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan delivered important messages on a wide range of topics, from developments in Syria and relations with Greece to Israel’s policies in the region and the integration process in Syria. Calling for good neighborly relations with Greece, Fidan stated, “We do not want Greece to become a tool of those who want to destabilize the region and plunge it into chaos.” Fidan also emphasized Türkiye’s sensitivity regarding the arming of islands that are currently demilitarized.

During his visit to Syria, Minister Fidan addressed Turkish journalists, discussing developments in the region and key issues on Turkey ‘s foreign policy agenda. Fidan stated that he had a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Shara that lasted approximately two hours, adding that his contacts in Damascus were comprehensive.

FIDAN’S MESSAGE ON SYRIA: THE BIGGEST THREAT IS ISRAEL.

Commenting on developments in Syria, Fidan expressed his concerns about the country’s descent into instability. Fidan stated , “Currently, the threat with the highest potential to destabilize Syria is Israel.”

Fidan stated that Syria has entered a new era in terms of sanctions and economic relations, and that the country has significant potential if it achieves stability and good governance.

Fidan argued that Israel views the strength and stability of neighboring countries as a threat, and stated that Syria’s desire to live in peace with the countries of the region should be taken into consideration.

THE SDG PROCESS IS BEING CLOSELY MONITORED.

Fidan also commented on the integration process in Syria. Stating that the first priority is for the SDF to cease being a threat, Fidan said that the announced principles contain positive messages.

Stating that they are closely monitoring the implementation of the process, Fidan emphasized that the practices on the ground should be consistent with the messages announced to the public.

“WE REBUILT THE SECURITY CULTURE”

Fidan, also commenting on Türkiye’s security policies in recent years, said that many problems stemming from the past, primarily the issue of terrorism, originated from Syria and Iraq.

Fidan stated that Türkiye is rebuilding its strategic and security culture regarding political and economic issues as well as external developments, and that work is ongoing to resolve problems stemming from neighboring countries.

A NEW STEP FOR THE MECCA ALLIANCE.

Referring to the cooperation among regional countries, Fidan said that following the joint efforts on Gaza, this cooperation continued in the context of Syria and the Iran-US conflict.

Fidan stated that regional countries are engaged in a collaborative effort based on peaceful diplomacy to counter Israel’s destabilizing role in the region.

Fidan stated that the institutionalization process of the Mecca Alliance is continuing, and that the three countries are holding discussions at a technical level, with the goal of expanding the alliance.

A MESSAGE OF “GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD” TO GREECE.

Turkish- Greek relations also featured prominently in Fidan’s statements. Stating that Greece should not be a part of regional instability, Fidan said, “We do not want Greece to be a tool of those who want to destabilize the region and plunge it into chaos. We want to maintain good neighborly relations .”

Stating that misunderstandings in the field of security should be avoided, Fidan said that Türkiye has a serious concern, especially regarding the arming of islands that are supposed to be demilitarized.

Fidan, drawing attention to Greece’s obligations arising from international agreements, stated , “Greece should not add another challenge to the numerous security challenges we face around us.”

S-400 NEGOTIATIONS ARE ONGOING.

Fidan stated that discussions regarding the S-400s are ongoing, and that technical negotiations are continuing between the relevant countries.

DIYARBAKIR VISIT: “A Türkiye WITHOUT TERRORISM” MESSAGE

Evaluating his visit to Diyarbakır last week, Fidan said that the “Turkey without terrorism” process has been accepted in the region.

Fidan emphasized the importance of establishing a lasting security environment in order to attract large investments to the region.
