Ongoing improvements to the Transcaucasian Trail mean that the best way to experience the country’s natural beauty and rich cultural history is on foot.

Volcanic peaks. Silk Road–era guesthouses. Homemade cheese and apricot brandy after a day of hiking. All of this awaits visitors to the Armenian section of the Transcaucasian Trail (TCT), which stretches more than 500 miles from Meghri on the country’s southern border to Lake Arpi National Park in the north, winding through oak forests, deep river gorges, and remote mountain villages.

Built largely by volunteers beginning in 2016, the TCT reconnects historic footpaths and shepherds’ routes across the Caucasus. When it is completed sometime in the next decade, the trail will span 1,864 miles across Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. New downloadable maps, improved trails and signage, and expanded trekking services rolling out through 2027 will make it easier than ever to explore Armenia on foot. Despite these improvements, many sections of the trail see only a handful of hikers, allowing travelers to wander through dramatic landscapes and remote communities without the crowds.

When to Go

Late spring through early fall generally offers the mildest temperatures and best hiking conditions, although weather varies by region. In the spring, mountain hillsides burst with colorful wildflowers and fragrant herbs. From mid-September to late October, the forests of Dilijan National Park and the hills of Syunik Province are ablaze with warm shades of gold and crimson. Several cultural festivals also coincide with optimal hiking conditions, such as the Sheep Shearing Festival in the southern region of Syunik in June and the Areni Wine Festival in the sparsely populated southeastern province of Vayots Dzor in October.

The weather can vary drastically, however. The high-altitude Gegham Mountains are snowbound from October until June, making July and August the only reliable months to cross the mountain range. Some of the lower-elevation southern regions, including the forests of Arevik National Park and the canyons and mountain passes of Vayots Dzor Province, experience extreme heat in July and August, while high elevation regions can drop to freezing at night, even in the summer.

What to Do

Go Hiking:

A journey on the TCT blends Armenia’s dramatic landscapes with a history shaped by ancient kingdoms, early Christianity, the Ottoman and Persian Empires, and the Soviet era. Whether you tackle the entire trail, hike a multiday section, or set out for the day, there’s no shortage of culinary, cultural, and historical experiences to balance the long days of walking.

Visit Meghri Fortress and Tatev Monastery:

Beginning in the south, the trail passes through the deep canyons and mountain passes of Syunik, where visitors can explore landmarks like the hilltop Meghri Fortress and the 9th-century Tatev Monastery, which rises dramatically above the Vorotan Gorge.

Drink Wine and Eat Cheese:

The northern stretch of the trail winds through the vineyards and rust-colored cliffs of Vayots Dyor, one of the world’s oldest winemaking regions. Stop at working wineries near the trail; visit Areni-1 Cave, the site of a 6,000-year-old winery; and spend the night at family-run guesthouses like Old Martiros, where visitors can make cave-aged cheese, help prepare herb-filled soups, and share stories over apricot brandy beneath walnut trees.

Explore the Landscape:

Farther north, the Gegham Mountains open into a volcanic plateau dotted with crater lakes and alpine meadows. Climbers can summit Mount Azhdahak (the range’s highest point at nearly 12,000 feet), search for petroglyphs, and encounter pastoralist Yazidi herders. The trail then descends into the cool, lush landscapes of Dilijan and Lori, where medieval monasteries—relics of Armenia’s early Christian heritage—are tucked into oak and beech forests.

Getting Around

How you choose to reach the TCT depends on which section of the trail you want to visit. Most sections are accessible by bus or car from Yerevan, Armenia’s capital. However, some regions, including Lori and Tavush, are closer to Tbilisi, Georgia. If you plan to trek the entire trail from south to north, a daily minibus is available from Yerevan to the southern starting point in Meghri.

Once you’re there, there’s only one way to get around: on foot. Updated digital maps have made it easier to navigate the trails, while new trekking services are connecting prospective hikers with expert guides who can help plan their itinerary, organize luggage transfers, and book accommodations, transport, and cultural experiences.
