FRESNO, Calif. — Artist Hazel Antaramian’s Landscape Memories project continues its October debut where dance footprints onto the artist’s canvas become the basis of visual imagery of immigration, crossing borders, and an invitation of belonging to another community without forgetting that it is the lands of both humans and nonhumans. The imagery of Armenian birds found in the show’s paintings encompasses those migratory creatures that make Armenia their home, even if only part of the year. The Armenian stork that nests in the Ararat wetlands makes the land its seasonal home nearby quaint villages. As the natural nesting habitat of the stork has been persistently threatened by infrastructure development, the local villagers have helped the storks by rehabilitating structures that can be used for their nesting. The cover painting, White Storks on Nest, is a multimedia painting where the storks sit on an ambiguous nest, in an uncertain landscape, somewhere in Armenia.
Meet the artist during ArtHop Night on Thursday, November 5, from 5pm – 8 pm at ZARTONK Gallery and Mariposa Plaza on Fulton Street in Downtown Fresno.
