Armenia issues search warrant for Pres. Sargsyan’s brother
According to prosecutors, he has been charged under Article 46-256, Part 3, Point 3 of the Criminal Code (incitement to embezzlement of entrusted property). Pre-trial detention has been ordered as a preventive measure, and a search has been announced.
Alexander Sargsyan is accused of embezzlement on an especially large scale.
Earlier, it was reported that a court had ordered the arrest of Alexander (Sashik) Sargsyan, the brother of Armenia’s third president Serzh Sargsyan, but he is not currently in the country.
According to investigators, within the framework of a criminal case examined by the Main Department for Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Sargsyan is accused of large-scale embezzlement. Authorities say that between 2001 and 2018, he used his influence—stemming from being the brother of Serzh Sargsyan, who served as Armenia’s defense minister from 2000 to 2007—to persuade successive heads of the Military Police Department of the Ministry of Defense to embezzle particularly large amounts of state funds entrusted to them.
