The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has formally requested information from the Armenian authorities regarding the detention conditions of Liana Harutyunyan and her 8-month-old baby, currently held at the Abovyan Penitentiary. The request follows an appeal filed by Harutyunyan’s lawyer, Zaruhi Postanjyan, who shared the ECHR’s response on Facebook on Thursday.
The young mother was recently arrested for allegedly violating the terms of a previously imposed lighter measure of restraint. Her infant remains with her in custody.
Armenia’s Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan visited the Abovyan Medical Center named after Rubik Harutyunyan, where the child is temporarily located. Galyan assured that the baby is healthy and under the care of the medical staff and the mother. The child is expected to be discharged soon.
According to the minister, the mother and child are accommodated in a specially renovated section of the facility, equipped with essential household appliances, round-the-clock hot and cold water supply, children’s beds and necessary hygiene items.
Liana Harutyunyan is accused of assisting an illegal migration scheme involving Indian nationals.
