Pakistan is the Only Country that has not recognized Armenia’s Independence

On August 14, during an event for Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, Qasim Mohiuddin, the Pakistani Ambassador to Azerbaijan, stated that Pakistan has always highly valued the support of the Azerbaijani state and people. The ambassador recalled that in May, the Pakistani Armed Forces had responded firmly to an Indian attack. “After Pakistan’s decisive response to India’s provocation, everyone saw our strength, and this success was noted by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Türkiye in Lachin,” Mohiuddin stated.
He praised the “far-sighted policy of President Ilham Aliyev” for the liberation of Karabakh and expressed hope that Pakistan would one day also liberate territories occupied by India. Mohiuddin emphasized that Pakistan had no intention of changing its policy toward Armenia without prior consultations with Azerbaijan. He reminded the audience that Pakistan had not recognized Armenia as an independent state due to the illegal occupation of Azerbaijani territories, calling this stance “an expression of love, respect, and solidarity with brotherly Azerbaijan.” He noted that this policy had been maintained for three decades and that any change would only occur after consulting with Baku.
Commenting on the agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington, the ambassador described it as a very positive development for bilateral relations. He stressed that the Washington meeting was a historic summit between US President Donald Trump, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, adding that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had called President Aliyev to congratulate him on the achievement.
Mohiuddin also stated that Azerbaijan and Pakistan might hold another round of interministerial political consultations as early as next year, while the 9th meeting of the intergovernmental commission was planned in two years. He explained that although the commission meets annually, the broad agenda sometimes requires several years of preparation, noting that the 8th meeting took place on January 24 of this year alongside political consultations. He further emphasized the importance of mutual high-level visits but noted that none were expected in the near future.
