Three false narratives targeting Samvel Karapetyan’s new political team

Narek Karapetyan, First Vice President of the Tashir Group, has outlined three key false narratives he expects the Armenian authorities to use against the new political team being formed by businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan.
1. The Russian Narrative
Critics cite Karapetyan’s business ties to Russia, but Narek Karapetyan highlights that Russian economic influence has actually grown under the current government – from 27% of Armenia’s trade in 2018 to 60% in 2025, including re-exported Russian-origin goods via the UAE.
2. Alleged Ties to Former Leaders
Another claim is that Karapetyan is linked with former governments. Narek Karapetyan argues that all Armenian leaders have worked with major Diaspora investors. These were professional, not political, partnerships. Karapetyan’s approach is about forward-thinking strategy, not reviving old models.
3. Diaspora Should Stay Out
Some argue that the Diaspora shouldn’t influence Armenian politics. Yet, Narek Karapetyan highlights that Diaspora support worth $5 billion annually makes up nearly a quarter of Armenia’s GDP and directly aids 500,000 citizens. Dismissing this contribution overlooks harsh social realities, including a 23% poverty rate.
