U.S. Pushes Forward With the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity
By Eurasianet
- The U.S. plans to establish joint working groups with Armenia and Azerbaijan before year’s end to implement the TRIPP peace plan.
- TRIPP aims to create a route across Armenian territory connecting Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave, supported by $145 million in U.S. funding.
- While the EU has pledged support, key operational and security details remain unresolved as negotiations continue.
US diplomats intend to set up working groups with their Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts to accelerate implementation of the US-brokered provisional peace plan signed in August in Washington, according to a state-connected media outlet in Azerbaijan.
The Report.az outlet queried the State Department about the status of the peace deal, the centerpiece of which is the establishment of a route connecting the Azerbaijani mainland with its Nakhchivan exclave across Armenian territory, dubbed the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP). The State Department’s written response reiterated the US commitment to implementing the Washington agreement, noting that the Trump administration “will ensure the establishment of the first working groups with both governments by the end of the year.”
The State Department statement also praised Armenian and Azerbaijani efforts to clear the way for TRIPP, including action on border demarcation and mine clearance.
Negotiations to set TRIPP’s terms of operations have made slow progress since August. The United States has committed $145 million for TRIPP infrastructure. The European Union has likewise indicated it will help fund the project. But a construction timetable and key details are yet to be settled, including the extent to which US contractors will be involved in operating the corridor and providing security.
