You don’t have to be a psychiatrist to figure out there may be a connection between my interest in government sanctioned serial homicide and my past and family roots. I have been cognizant of eerie similarities between the GSSH of Armenian intellectuals in 1915 Istanbul and the ambush at the Dailey Plaza in 1963 .My great uncle Rupen Sevag a physician poet was a victim of GSSH in 1915.
After graduating from University of Lausanne Medical School, Sevag returned to Istanbul with pregnant wife and son to serve In Gallipoli as an officer of the Ottoman army. Along with 250 other intellectuals on the night of April 24th 19, 15 , was stripped off his uniform taken to Cankiri to be silenced.
Some 30 years after Dr Sevag’s death, soon after the Nazi invasion of Austria my maternal Uncle Krikor from Istanbul was shipped to join the Nazi army in Vienna at the age of 18. He was neither blonde nor German, but served Hitlers army – granted Austrian citizenship in early. 1900s after the Nazi invasion of Austria and died in Russia. He did not want to be a fugitive. My uncle did not want to join his cousin who took refuge somewhere in Western Turkey.
This was war! An Armenian boy from a privileged family leaving home for Hitler to fight Stalin’s red army in 1945.
My uncles were gone. For a very long time, like many other grieving Armenians ,we cried quietly not allowed to mention the taboo word “ genocide”.
The 90’s brought global fame and success to me as a VIP Doctor for Hollywood stars and royalty. I was in cloud 9 as a family consultant for one of the most influential families in Istanbul. Also, in the latr 1990’s Hrant Dink ,editor of Agos a leading voice of minority rights in Turkey and I began dreaming about an Armenian Heritage Museum to celebrate magnificent architectural and cultural and contributions to the Ottoman Turkey over many centuries.
My friends and family were absolutely opposed to a museum. The consensus was Turkey was not ready to face her tragic past.
Neither Hrant nor myself would listen. We charged forward with fire. Then slowly came dark clouds of imminent trouble. Hrant was charged of defaming Turkiye by revealing the Armenian heritage of Sabiha Gokcen ,an orphan of the Armenian genocide the adoptive daughter of Ataturk the father of modern Turkiye .
I lost my VIP job without cause a few months before, Hrant was silenced in 2007..
Distraught and guilty I managed to give a tearful eulogy to honor my friend his extraordinary intellectual courage to defend equal rights for all at the Saint Mary’s Armenian Church in N.W. Washington, DC..…..Later, on the phone my sister Rehan in Istanbul and I sobbed listening to thousands in the streets chanting “ We are all Hrant”.
Hrant’ loss energized me to investigate GSSH further.
Sadly, tragically more losses would shadow. This time it was the war against pain doctors. The irrational war that locked up 20,000 pain doctors in the last 2 decades.
I lost Kevin Byers, Siobhan Reynolds my associates to GSSH in the war against doctors in 2011 after a few months Of organizing the first global pain awareness day the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. with 56 churches around the world rang their bells.
In excellent weather, their jet crashed on the runway of Chicago Airport. A few days before the crash an anonymous death threat had frightened me to take refuge in my identical twin’s house in Houston after closing my office for a few days .A zoom conference with them never occurred .
My personal losses and the suicidal deaths of seven of my patients within one year after the closure of my office represent a very small percentage of death and misery of millions around the world in the last century yet they share common causes and solutions.
All wars and GSSH are savage are preventable. They downgrade every victim to a helpless living thing.
Millions of civilians and soldiers who perish have no choice. They die by the orders of their trusted leaders. The residents of Hiroshima , Nagasaki, Dresden Tokyo were not mean dead Japanese and Germans.
Our national shame from crimes of our ancestors prevents progress by failing to learn from human errors.
We cannot change our past errors. But we can learn from them to prevent future ones
.Let us promote evidence based museums.
