Ex-president Robert Kocharyan discharged from hospital, taken to prison
Second president of Armenia and leader of the opposition “Armenia” Alliance, Robert Kocharyan, has been discharged from Surb Grigor Lusavorich Medical Center and transferred to Yerevan-Kentron Penitentiary, informed lawyer Aram Orbelyan.
As reported earlier, a two-month pretrial detention was applied Thursday morning as a preventive measure to Robert Kocharyan.
“Taking into account the public interest, it is hereby informed that the Anti-Corruption Court (presided over by Judge S. Dadoyan) has fully granted the investigator’s petition and detention has been applied as a preventive measure to R.K. [i.e. Robert Kocharyan],” had said Marina Ohanjanyan, the spokesperson for the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia.
The Anti-Corruption Court has been examining since Wednesday the petition submitted by the investigative body to remand former president Robert Kocharyan in custody. At night, Kocharyan was taken to the hospital again on the instructions of doctors, and the court examination of the aforesaid petition continued without him.
Robert Kocharyan has been charged with abuse of official authority, money laundering on a particularly large scale, and receiving a particularly large bribe.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had instructed the law enforcement to deprive second President Robert Kocharyan and third President Serzh Sargsyan of their assets.
