An Armenian Wrestler Wins Silver Medal; Two Others Bronze at Olympics
Armenian wrestler Artur Aleksanyan on Wednesday won a silver medal in the Men’s Greco-Roman 97kg event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He is joined by fellow Team Armenia athletes Slavik Galstyan and Malkhas Amoyan, who each won bronze medals earlier in the day.
In a final match against Iran’s Mohammad Hadi Saravi, Aleksanyan was defeated 4-1.
Aleksanyan, who is a world and European champion, has won gold, silver, and bronze medals at previous Olympic games in Rio (2016), Tokyo (2020), and London (2012) respectively.
Slavik Galstyan, who is representing Armenia in the Men’s Greco-Roman 67kg event at the Olympics, won bronze after defeating French opponent Mamadas Silas and Ecuador’s Andres Roberto Montaño Arroyo in earlier matches.
Galstyan lost 10-4 to Iran’s Saed Esmaeli—the current champion of Asia—in the semi-finals.
Armenia’s Malkhas Amoyan won bronze in the Men’s Greco-Roman 77kg event in a match against Aram Vardanyan, an Armenian representing Uzbekistan, with a score of 6-5.
A three-time European Champion, Amoyan has previously won a gold medal at the 2022 World Championship.
Armenian runner Yervand Mkrtchyan set a new national record at the Paris Olympics by completing the men’s 800-meter race in 1 minute, 49.91 seconds.
The 800-meter runner is ranked 51st in the Olympics total ranking.
