Armineh Johannes to Publish ‘We Are Our Mountains’ Photobook

Photojournalist Armineh Johannes announced that she is preparing to release a book of photographs on Armenia and Artsakh, which she captured over a span of 30 years.
“We Are Our Mountains” is a living archive of Armenian memory and the life’s work of Armineh Johannes in documenting Armenia, Artsakh (Nagorono-Karabakh) and its people.
Through this body of work, she tells the story of more than 30 years in the life of a population faced with war, exile, and pogroms — a population others have tried to break, yet who remain standing: proud, unyielding, like the mountains that surround them.
The book spans decades, generations, losses, and rebirths. From the outbreak of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1989 to the Azerbaijani offensive in 2023, the photographer bears witness to the most profound moments in the existence of the Armenian people.
Beyond current events, this work stands as an authentic page of Armenian history, carried by a deeply human and documentary approach.
“I am honored to announce the release of my first book, ‘We Are Out Mountains,’ the fruit of a lifetime of work in Armenia and Artsakh,” Johannes said.
The book, published by Four Eyes Editions, contains hundreds of images in 244 pages, with an introduction written by Tigrane Yegavian.
Armineh Johannes is a documentary photographer born in Tehran to Armenian parents, and based in France since 1980. Since 1989, she has returned regularly to the land of her ancestors, documenting life in Armenia and Karabakh through war, exile, faith, and reconstruction.
She is one of the few photographers to have been present in Artsakh during the early days of the conflict. Since then, her long-term commitment has never wavered, staying close to the people she photographs.
