Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo Appoints Greg Martayan as her Senior Advisor on Public Safety and Retail Theft in Joint Meeting with Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, Chair of Assembly Select Committee on Retail Theft

LOS ANGELES – In a move to build upon efforts to combat retail theft across the state, Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo has appointed Greg Martayan as her Senior Advisor for issues surrounding public safety and curbing retail theft. This appointment reflects the Assemblymember’s commitment to addressing public safety and supporting small businesses affected by organized theft.

Assemblymember Schiavo, representing Santa Clarita and the North San Fernando Valley (California’s 40th Assembly District), has displayed exemplary leadership through her work to pass the California Retail Theft Reduction Act (AB 2943),  which she co-authored with Assemblymember Rick Zbur, and was part of a package of 10 bills signed into law by the Governor last month to address retail theft. Schiavo’s work during her first term has shown an unwavering commitment to public service, championing policies that uplift working families and ensure equitable access to healthcare and education. Her collaborative approach and ability to build coalitions across diverse stakeholders reflect her dedication to addressing the most pressing issues facing her constituents. By consistently advocating for sustainable economic growth and fostering community resilience, Schiavo has earned a reputation as a tireless advocate who prioritizes the well-being of the people she serves. Greg Martayan is the Vice President of External Affairs for The Valley Economic Alliance. An institution that serves the 400 square miles of the San Fernando Valley, with a population of over 160,000 businesses and 2,000,000 residents. Martayan was formerly the Director of Public Safety for the City of Los Angeles’s Fifth Council District, where he effectively and successfully reduced violent crime and retail theft during his tenure.

Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, who was named Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Retail Theft by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, expressed confidence in Martayan’s experience and expertise. “Greg brings a wealth of knowledge in this subject matter that will be invaluable as we work to develop policies that safeguard California’s retail sector and protect jobs,” said Zbur. “His understanding of regional dynamics will help shape effective solutions that can be applied statewide.”

Assemblymember Schiavo, who was appointed by Speaker Rivas to serve on the Select Committee on Retail Theft alongside Chair Zbur, echoed these sentiments. “Retail theft has become a critical issue for our communities, affecting both local economies and consumer confidence. The Select Committee on Retail Theft is tasked with reviewing statewide trends, assessing current enforcement efforts, and exploring legislative solutions to mitigate the economic and social impacts of theft on retailers, from small businesses to large chains.
