Bill Introduced to Rename Glendale Post Office After WWII Veteran

U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff and U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman, both California Democrats, introduced legislation Tuesday, July 29, to rename a Glendale post office after Paul Ignatius (Iknadossian), a 104-year-old former Navy secretary who was the highest-ranking Armenian American in government during his tenure.
The bill would designate the facility at 6444 San Fernando Road as the “Paul Ignatius Post Office,” honoring the World War II veteran who served as the 59th secretary of the Navy under President Lyndon Johnson.
Ignatius worked as a temporary clerk at the Glendale post office while in college. The facility sits on the same street where his grandfather built the family home nearly a century ago when they were among the earliest Armenian families to settle in Glendale in 1911.
“Paul Ignatius dedicated a lifetime of service to the country, one that deserves recognition and respect,” said Schiff. “The designation of the ‘Paul Ignatius Post Office’ in his hometown recognizes his storied career, remarkable achievements, and celebrates his prominent legacy within the Glendale and Armenian community. His family is the epitome of the American Dream, and his legacy serves as an inspiration for generations of Americans.”
Friedman called Ignatius “a patriot, a trailblazer, and a proud Armenian American” who represents “the best of Glendale and the best of America.”
“Naming this post office in his honor is a fitting tribute to his legacy of service, from his time in uniform to the highest levels of government. I’m proud to help lead this effort with Senator Schiff to recognize all he’s given to our community and nation,” said Friedman.
Ignatius served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II before holding several Defense Department positions under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Johnson. He was assistant secretary of the Army and undersecretary of defense before his promotion to Navy secretary.
