Dear Mr. President,
The California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation would like to address that the word “genocide” was missing from your statement on
the anniversary of the 110th Armenian Genocide.
For Armenians, the use of the word “genocide” is extremely important in acknowledging the atrocities that occurred with the systemic
annihilation of over 1.5 million Armenians. Your use of the term “Meds Yeghern,” or Great Crime, is not the same thing as acknowledging that
this was a genocide. The atrocities that took place in 1915 were committed by the Ottoman Turks and the atrocities that currently take place
against the Armenians are once again being committed by the Turks and Azeris. Those who committed the atrocities against the Armenians
in the past and present are the same people who deny the Genocide today. Genocide is a valid definition of the mass-killings and
deportations of Armenians. By not using the word “genocide” you are failing to provide historical justice.
California is home to the largest number of Armenian Americans in the United States. This past week we stood in alliance with dozens of
bipartisan Senators and Assemblymembers to acknowledge and remember the Armenian Genocide. Much like all other 50 states in California
and over 35 countries, we affirm that the Armenian Genocide did happen and deserves to be remembered.
We acknowledge the suffering of the Armenian Genocide to reaffirm our collective commitment to stand against future ethnic cleansings and
genocides and request that you do the same.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions, please contact Natalie Bruton-Yenovkian at
