Commentary “OUR WARSHIPS CANNOT CLIMB MOUNT ARARAT”
Armenians often cite this statement allegedly made by Winston Churchill referring to the plight of the Armenians under Ottoman Rule, as evidence of the treachery of England and the West.
On reflection, would not it be more realistic to take that statement, if it was made, as a blunt statement of political realities?
Given the present-day realities and the experience of the 44-day war, one has to have another close look at how the pawns are aligned on the chessboard.
Azerbaijan represents the greatest threat to the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Armenia. Armenian Authorities are resolute in their pursuit of peace at all costs. This policy of course negates the ancient Armenian catch cry of choice between “Freedom or death”. It can rightly be said that the present catch cry can only be “Subjugation or Death”. That is to say, “We are prepared to be subjugated rather than be dead” meaning “unconditional surrender”. That spells the end of sovereignty.
As the quotation goes, “War is the failure of diplomacy”. Armenian Diplomacy is surrender and avoid war.
Question arises? What would Armenia surrender after surrendering all its land. because there is not agreement with Azerbaijan of what the Armenian Territory is.
Should this eventually lead to an armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan how would Europe, or the USA support Armenia? Assuming they decide to do so. Would it be a “proxy” support, providing Arms to Armenia for Armenian soldiers to fight? In such a war, how will European and western arms come to Armenia? Would Turkey allow arms to be sent to Armenia through Turkish Territory to be used against the Azeris? Would Georgia allow it? Would it be safe to fly USA or European Arms to Armenia over Lebanon, or Syria, given the current geopolitical alignments. Would Iran allow such arms to cross it territory?
International Diplomacy is not about who one likes or dislikes. It is about who can meet your country’s present needs, not the past. It is about striking the right bargain. No ally gives support without receiving something in return. Armenia must consider what it is giving in return for its alliance with Russia, Europe, or the USA and what is it receiving in return. What can Armenia give to the European Union, NATO, or the USA in return for their full support? What can Armenia give Russia? In what way is Armenia’s alliance benefits these political entities?
Which is more in the interests of Armenia?
These are points to ponder.
There are some interesting lessons and quotations from history which Armenia must constantly refer to.
Nations call their military a DEFENSE force. It is said that one must be prepared to fight to achieve peace.
Armenians of Armenia have experienced subjugation for 70 years under Soviet Domination. However, other Armenians have experienced subjugation under Turkish and Azeri Rule. Have the two been the same?
Food for thought.
