Azerbaijan must provide detailed information about Armenian prisoners held in custody by the end of January.
There are 23 prisoners of Armenian nationality in Azerbaijan. Seven prisoners from Nagorno-Karabakh who are in Azerbaijan have already been convicted, 16 people are awaiting trial. Former Karabakh leaders have been accused of particularly serious crimes.
The European Court of Human Rights has obliged Azerbaijan to provide detailed information about Armenian prisoners held in Baku prisons, Armenia’s representative on international legal issues Yeghishe Kirakosyan reported today.
Information about Armenian prisoners in Baku prisons must be provided by Azerbaijan by the end of January 2025.
According to Kirakosyan, in addition to the ECHR, claims on the issue of prisoners “who are accused on fabricated charges” were also filed with the UN International Court. These claims concern illegal trials and illegal deprivation of liberty of persons held in Baku.
Recall that after the 2020 war, 195 people are considered missing, of which 175 are military personnel and 20 are civilians. The representative of the interests of Armenian prisoners in the ECHR, Siranush Sahakyan, reports 80 forcibly disappeared, but, according to her, Baku refuses to provide any information about them.
The International Red Cross last visited Armenian prisoners in Baku in early December. According to the head of communications programs of the Armenian office of the Red Cross, Zara Amatuni, they were given personal belongings and were given the opportunity to contact their relatives.
