French-Armenian archaeological team discovers rare ancient mural at Erebuni

A French-Armenian archaeological mission has uncovered a remarkable fragment of an ancient mural with exceptionally well-preserved colors at the Erebuni archaeological site, the French Embassy in Armenia has announced.

According to the embassy, the discovery is considered unprecedented and is believed to date back to the second half of the 7th century BC or the beginning of the 6th century BC.

The embassy described the find as an outstanding example of the enduring scientific cooperation between France and Armenia, highlighting the long-standing partnership in archaeological research that continues to yield significant results.

Erebuni, founded in 782 BC by the Urartian King Argishti I, is one of Armenia’s most important archaeological sites and a key source of information on the ancient Kingdom of Urartu.
