Greek Army Engineers Build Bridges in Armenia to Restore Flood-Damaged Infrastructure

In a remarkable show of international solidarity, the Greek Armed Forces have stepped in to aid Armenia by constructing three Bailey Bridges in the flood-stricken Lori region in northern Armenia.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Construction and Disaster Management Command (DIKAFKA) of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, follows severe flooding in May 2024 that damaged critical infrastructure.
A team of eight engineers, led by DIKAFKA Chief Lt. Gen. Michail Klouvas, has been working on-site in collaboration with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This humanitarian mission is part of Greece’s contribution under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, triggered by Armenia’s request for assistance. The effort was further reinforced during a high-level meeting on December 4, 2024, between Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan in Washington, D.C.
Two bridges have already been successfully installed—one in the village of Karkop, spanning the Debed River, and another in the village of Hobardzi, across the Gargar River. A third bridge is nearing completion in the village of Aymur, located near Karkop. Notably, one of these structures incorporates components from a historic 200-metre Bailey Bridge dismantled in Thessaloniki’s Sindos region in 1990, later replaced by a permanent structure.
“This mission reflects Greece’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian aid and the strengthening of ties with the friendly people of Armenia,” the Greek Ministry of Defense said in a statement. It also highlighted the broader importance of collaboration on civil protection initiatives, particularly in the face of escalating challenges posed by the global climate crisis.
The Lori region holds a special significance for Greece, as it has been home to Greek communities since the 19th century, particularly in the town of Alaverdi, which remains a vibrant hub for the Greek diaspora.
This project underscores the enduring bonds between Greece and Armenia, rooted in shared values and a history of mutual support, further solidifying Greece’s role as a key contributor to regional stability and humanitarian efforts.
