Ian Calderon Cites Record on Armenian Issues in Announcing Run for California Governor

Ian Calderon
Former California Majority Leader Ian Calderon announced his campaign for California Governor on Tuesday. In his official announcement obtained by Asbarez, Calderon cited his record on supporting issues important to the Armenian-American community.
“One of the first members of the Armenian Legislative Caucus, he consistently elevated the contributions of Armenian Americans to the state of California and led the commemoration of the Armenian Genocide centennial on the Assembly floor,” Calderon’s official statement said.
“He served as principal coauthor on key resolutions, honoring the work of Near East Relief, designating April 24th as California’s official Day of Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, and co-authoring legislation to mandate the inclusion of Armenian Genocide education in California public schools,” the statement added.
Calderon’s announcement said that he has “remained a steadfast advocate for Armenian Genocide recognition, support for a free and independent Republic of Artsakh, and the ongoing needs of the Armenian American community in California.”
As part of Assembly leadership, he also played a key role in securing the initial state funding for the Armenian American Museum, working closely with Speaker Anthony Rendon to ensure its success.
“California is the most dynamic state in the country, but for too many people, the cost of living makes it harder and harder to build a stable future here,” Calderon said, as he pledged to lower the cost of living, and make homeownership actually attainable for working-class families
“I’m running for Governor because families deserve relief, small businesses deserve room to grow, and because homeownership should be a reality again for Californians,” Calderon added.
A Democrat, Calderon’s statement said his priorities include lowering the cost of gas, groceries, and childcare; ensuring paychecks keep up with rising expenses; and tackling inflation to deliver relief to families.
The 2026 Primary Elections will take place on March 3.
