Learning French language in Armenia gains new momentum: France will provide 600,000 euros
YEREVAN (ARKA) — Armenian Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Zhanna Andreasyan and French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies signed an agreement in Yerevan on Tuesday, aimed at improving the quality of teaching French in Armenian schools, reported the press service of the ministry.
According to the agreement, the parties will join forces to ensure, consistent, regular and coordinated retraining of French teachers for a minimum of 10 days per teacher per year, from the beginning of 2025. The 225-hour pilot training program, which will be carried out by the French operator ‘’France Education International’’ in conjunction with the ‘’National Center for Education Development and Innovation Foundation’’, will be organized for about 30 teachers.
The Minister stated that the program being launched is fully in line with the reforms being carried out in the field of general education in Armenia.
“According to the new general education criterion, we have set the task of improving the knowledge of foreign languages in our schools. New French language teaching programs will be introduced in schools, and new textbooks and teaching materials will be provided. A lot of work will also be done to retrain teachers,” noted Andreasyan.
She emphasized that in recent years a group of French language teachers has been formed, which was also facilitated by programs implemented in cooperation with the French Embassy.
According to the minister, the list of schools that offer advanced French language training programs will be clarified. It currently includes 19 schools.
“However, their number may increase, given that the new programs will also generate great interest among other schools,” said Andreasyan.
The Minister also announced that in 2027 Armenia will host the 10th international sports and cultural Games of Francophonie.
The French Ambassador to Armenia noted that Armenia’s membership in the International organization of Francophonie is of strategic importance.
Decottignies also stressed the need to spread the teaching of French not only in Yerevan, but also in the regions of Armenia.
He reported that within the framework of the project, France will provide 600 thousand euros to improve the quality of French language teaching in Armenia and to support the needs of students.
The Ambassador stated that the project also aims to organize courses for pedagogical retraining for French language teachers and expand the network of in-depth French language training.
