Section of 101 Freeway Named in Honor of Katcho Achadjian

A memorial sign has been unveiled on U.S. Route 101, dedicating a section of this major highway to Katcho Achadjian.

After immigrating to the United States, Achadjian established himself as a successful businessman and a dedicated public official. As a San Luis Obispo County Supervisor, Achadjian was known for his hands-on approach to governance and his commitment to community development. His legislative work in the California State Assembly was marked by significant reforms and initiatives in public safety and economic growth. A registered Republican, Achadjian was uniquely respected by Democrats, a testament to his ability to bridge divides and work collaboratively to reach consensus for the common good.

Achadjian was appointed by multiple governors to key commissions and played a pivotal role in championing the Armenian-American community. Amongst his many Armenian-focused contributions, most notably, Achadjian authored AB 1915, the Armenian Genocide Education Act, that requires the teaching of the Armenian Genocide in California schools, specifically for adopted courses of study in Social Science for grades 7-12. In addition, it requires the Department of Education to include the atrocities of 1915 in their publication and teaching materials, ensuring that Armenian history is shared with future generations. His bill was successfully passed and voted into law.
