US President Donald Trump has described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a “good” leader.
Trump made the remark during a White House meeting with newly appointed ambassadors, including Tom Barrack, his nominee for US ambassador to Turkey.
“As one of the world’s oldest civilizations, the host nation seeks your vision for peace, prosperity, and security,” Barrack said to Trump. The president responded, “It’s a good place, and its leader is good too.”
The exchange came amid Turkey’s largest anti-government protests in over a decade, triggered by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
