According to the results of the 2024 all-Armenian survey “Caucasus Barometer” conducted by the CRRC Armenia research organization, the trust of the Armenian society in the authorities has significantly decreased over the past five years.
If in 2019 67% of respondents believed that Armenia’s domestic policy is developing in the right direction, in 2024 this indicator is only 21%. However, compared to 2021, there is a slight increase of 4%.
The survey revealed significant changes in the level of trust in various institutions. If in 2021 the Office of the Human Rights Defender was the most trusted institution in Armenia (60% completely trusted), in 2024 this indicator decreased to 11.6%. The opposite picture is observed with regard to religious institutions: trust in them has increased from 11% to 62.5%.
At the same time, the majority of Armenians (75.8%) believe that in today’s Armenia they have the right to freely express their thoughts. However, 70.6% of respondents believe that the country’s courts are biased towards some citizens.
The survey also showed that if parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, 45.4% of Armenian citizens would definitely participate in them, and another 13.7% would most likely.
As for foreign policy preferences, opinions are evenly divided on the issue of NATO membership: 33% support membership in the alliance, while 33.7% are against. At the same time, the idea of joining the European Union finds greater support. 44% of respondents are positive about such a prospect, while 26.5% are against.
Armenia’s “main enemy” continues to be considered Azerbaijan, although the perception of Turkey as a threat has significantly decreased, from 46% in 2021 to 28% in 2024.
Interestingly, the most common answer to the question “Which party do you consider closest to you?” remains “there is no such party” (42.8%). However, this indicator has decreased compared to the previous year, and there is a certain increase in the level of support for the parties that received the most votes.
