United States provides $175,00 for restoration of Yereruyk basilica in Armenia
According to the press service of the department, specialists visited the village of Garnahovit in the Aragatsotn region, where the 7th century St. Gevork Church is located, where the Ministry of Education and Science, together with philanthropist Hamlet Tadevosyan, is carrying out restoration work. At the moment, work is underway to erect the roof of the monument. According to the design and estimate documentation, they are planned to be made with tiles. The professional group got acquainted with the quality of the slabs used at the site, studied implementation methods and discussed the sequence of further work.
The group also visited the medieval Church of St. Hovhannes in the village of Mastara, Aragatsotn region, which is considered one of the oldest and most perfect buildings of medieval Armenia and is distinguished by its architectural style. It was once surrounded by walls, which were demolished in 1889 during renovations to the church. The church is in relatively good condition, but experts note that it also has problems with the roof.
The next visit took place to the early Christian Basilica of Yereruyk in the Anipemza community of Shirak region. Given the exclusivity of the Basilica, it was constantly under the attention of the state, regularly strengthened and was partially restored. In recent years, the state also ordered a project to strengthen it, which was implemented by the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia on the basis of a memorandum signed in 2023 between the Ministry of Education and Science and the US Embassy. According to the document, the United States allocated $175,000 for the protection of the cathedral-basilica, of which work worth 58 million drams is planned for 2024.
