U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed optimism that a long-overdue peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia could soon be concluded, raising hopes for the final resolution of decades of conflict.
Speaking at a Cabinet meeting in the White House on July 8, Rubio highlighted positive diplomatic momentum in the South Caucasus and credited the administration of President Donald Trump for fostering the conditions necessary for progress. “Hopefully, pretty soon, a peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be concluded],” Rubio stated. “And it hasn’t even been six months. So it’s a great testament to your leadership.” Although Rubio refrained from disclosing specific details.
On March 13, 2025, the two sides announced they had finalized the text of a bilateral peace treaty. The draft treaty outlines mutual recognition of borders, non-use of force, renunciation of territorial claims, and the cessation of hostile legal and political actions.
The international community, including Türkiye, the European Union, and the United States, has welcomed the progress made.
