Vladimir Putin appointed Karen Chalyan as Russian ambassador to Equatorial Guinea
By the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Karen Chalyan was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Equatorial Guinea. With a second decree, Putin released Chalyan from the duties of the Russian ambassador to Rwanda.
Chalyan graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations affiliated with the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977. He is fuent in English and Serbian.
In 1993-1996, he was an advisor to the Department of International Organizations of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in 1996-2010, staff member of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Belgrade, the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, and UN Mission in Liberia, chief of staff of the mission.
2010-2017 was the Chief of Staff of the African Union-UN Joint Operation in Darfur (Sudan). In 2014, he temporarily performed the duties of the deputy head of the UN mission in South Lebanon. In 2018-2024, he was the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Russian Federation in Rwanda.
