Greg Vartan Launches 2026 Campaign for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District

SUMMIT, NJ — Greg Vartan, a former Summit Council President and longtime community volunteer, has announced his candidacy for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, aiming to unseat Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. The district, known for its competitiveness, is seen as a crucial battleground in the upcoming 2026 election.
Vartan, 31, has deep roots in Summit, where his family has lived for four generations. A former EMT and public servant, he made history as the youngest president of the Summit Common Council and remains actively involved in local leadership. “I’ve spent my life serving the people of this district, and I’m committed to fighting for the issues that matter to everyday families—like lowering costs, expanding healthcare, and improving education,” Vartan said at his campaign launch last week.
A passionate advocate for the Armenian-American community, Vartan also highlighted the importance of having a representative in Congress who understands the needs of this group. If elected, Vartan would become the only Armenian-American in Congress. “The Armenian-American community deserves a voice in Washington, especially at a time when Armenia and Artsakh face significant challenges. I will work to strengthen U.S.-Armenia relations and seek justice for the Armenian Genocide,” he said.
Vartan’s candidacy comes after a brief 2024 campaign for the same seat, which he exited early, but not without building name recognition. Now, with a strong track record of public service and a clear vision for the future, Vartan is confident in his ability to win both the Democratic primary and the general election. His early entry into the race is already drawing attention, with Democratic energy in the district building early.
Vartan’s platform centers on addressing rising costs, protecting fundamental freedoms, and improving local infrastructure. He also criticized Kean’s inaccessibility and his unwillingness to challenge party leadership. “We need leaders who prioritize their constituents over themselves. I will be that leader for the 7th district,” Vartan said.
With the 2026 race shaping up to be a tough battle, Vartan’s roots, record of service, and dedication to community make him a formidable contender. As he campaigns across the district, Vartan is committed to engaging with voters, ensuring their concerns are heard, and providing a voice for the people of New Jersey’s 7th District in Washington.
