H. Hovnanian Family Foundation Awards $221,000 to Strengthen Armenia’s Arts and Culture Sector
While Armenia boasts a vibrant artistic landscape, its cultural sector faces persistent structural challenges, including institutional fragmentation and a shortage of technical and managerial specialists who connect creators to audiences. To address these systemic bottlenecks, the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation awarded $221,000 in grants to seven initiatives through its second-quarter 2026 Arts & Culture grant cycle.
The nationwide cycle focuses on structural ecosystem-building, cultivating the sector’s ‘missing middle layer,’ such as producers, cultural managers, and stage technicians, and fostering cross-sector collaborations and regional reach.
“Armenia’s creative community has immense artistic talent, but sustainable growth requires reliable infrastructure, technical expertise, and institutional permanence,” said Anahit Hakobyan, Program Manager at the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation. “From training stage and lighting crews to modernizing municipal libraries and incubating independent artist associations, these projects invest in the foundational systems that allow the entire sector to thrive independently.”
To address specialized talent shortages in Armenia’s animation sector, the ReA Academy Lab—launched by the ReA Festival—will train 25 professionals alongside five educators. Covering scriptwriting, production, and visual art, the initiative builds a train-the-trainer pipeline to help participants assemble market-ready animation packages and pitch directly to international co-producers through the MarAni Market and CoReAct platform.
A major digital modernization is also underway across Yerevan’s municipal library network. Co-funded by the Yerevan Municipality, the Avetik Isahakyan Central Library, which stewards 700,000 volumes across 13 branches, will replace its 1990s legacy software with a unified Integrated Public Library Platform. The new system will streamline cataloging, circulation, and reservations for 160 staff members and 20,000 registered readers, setting a scalable benchmark for municipal libraries nationwide.
The Armenian National Music Academy (ANMA) is tackling the country’s deficit of skilled backstage crew through a workforce pipeline built with private production firms. Twenty-five students and early-career specialists will train across five essential tracks: sound engineering, lighting design, stage management, set construction, and cultural management. Five months of coursework will be paired with three months of hands-on field placements on premier national productions, including the Khazer Armenian Music Awards.
Early arts exposure is expanding into border settlements through SymphonicA’s ‘Symphonic Fairy Tales‘ initiative. The educational NGO will bring early childhood music programs to eight kindergartens across seven rural communities in Tavush, pairing interactive sessions by Armenian State Symphony Orchestra musicians with accredited teacher training for roughly 400 children and 20 educators.
Regional visual storytelling and youth engagement converge in ‘Sod Off – Into Yourself: Passport of Armenia,’ a pilot ethnography project led by the Caucasus Research Resource Center (CRRC)-Armenia alongside photographer Areg Balayan and curator Sona Margaryan. Working across Goris, Gyumri, and Vanadzor, the team will produce 30 narrative profiles per city, train 45 local youth through documentary workshops, and build an open digital archive exploring contemporary Armenian identity.
Independent artist self-governance will receive dedicated scaffolding through the Advocacy Society for the Arts (ASA). Under its 12-month incubation initiative, “Different Together: Amplifying Artistic Unions in Armenia,’ ASA will support the launch and institutional development of up to five professional unions across music, visual arts, and film, providing practical frameworks in non-profit law, advocacy, and membership operations.
On the screen, Fish Eye Art Cultural Foundation will support the local production phase of filmmaker Jivan Avetisyan’s feature Angels 2020. Grounded in frontline accounts of medical personnel during the 2020 Artsakh War, the grant is contingent on securing matching international co-production financing to position the film for global distribution.
Taken together, these seven initiatives underscore the Foundation’s commitment to building lasting institutional capacity across Armenia’s regions. This cycle complements the Foundation’s broader 2026 funding agenda, which began with Parks & Recreation (Q1) and will continue with upcoming cycles dedicated to Healthcare (Q3) and Capital Expenditures for Borderline Public Institutions (Q4).
