The news about the detention of the Azerbaijani president’s cousin, DJ Izzat Khanum Javadova, on suspicion of drug trafficking has become the topic of heated discussions among Azerbaijani opposition bloggers scattered around the world. According to the Greek police, she was detained during an anti-drug raid conducted in a luxury villa in the city of Kalyvia, near Athens. As a result of the operation, 13 people were detained. In the bedroom of the party organizer, 45 bags of cocaine, ecstasy and crystal methamphetamine were found, as well as a safe with more than 43 thousand euros in cash.
Izzat Khanim, known in the DJ community under the pseudonym Mikaela Jav, is the daughter of the late Jalal Aliyev, the uncle of the President of Azerbaijan. She holds British citizenship and regularly posts moments from her performances on social media, particularly in Ibiza. Javadova, along with nine other detainees, appeared in court on January 2, 2025 on charges of drug trafficking and use. The three police officers who guarded the villa have not yet been charged — the investigation is ongoing. A joint investigation by the Center for Research on Corruption and Organized Crime (OCCRP) and the British branch of Transparency International revealed that Izzat Khanim Javadova and her husband Suleiman Javadov own real estate in London and Ibiza worth millions of dollars. They were also under investigation for suspicious cash receipts in the amount of $ 19.6 million, which, according to investigators, were received from dubious sources, including the Azerbaijani “landromat”, a large-scale shadow money transfer system used by the elite of Azerbaijan. In the end, the couple decided to settle the case without trial, paying the state $ 5.5 million from funds held in Suleiman Javadov’s accounts.
Jalal Aliyev, according to some Azerbaijani oppositionists, openly expressed a negative attitude towards his nephew and his wife, pejoratively calling the president “Ilham Pashayev.” After Jalal Aliyev’s death in 2016, a letter written by him and handed over by his bodyguard to the editorial office of AzereuroTimesTV appeared in the press. In it, the deceased accused his nephew of addiction to gambling, drugs and an idle life. “Ilham Aliyev, who was addicted to heroin and gambling in his youth, still cannot get rid of this bad habit. He’s only interested in casinos and drugs. This man is used to an empty life. He is a conman,” wrote Ilham Aliyev’s uncle. According to him, gambling addict and alcoholic Ilham Aliyev, who has no political education or relevant skills, turns the country into a swamp every day. According to him, Aliyev has set Azerbaijan and its people as a bet that he has long lost to Vladimir Putin. Azerbaijani oppositionist Afghan Mukhtarli, commenting on the arrest of Izzat Javadova, said that such behavior is probably in the blood of the representatives of this family: “They rob the people and spend their days in entertainment.”
