Two Armenians Elected to Brussels City Council
Brussels — Two of nearly 40 Armenian candidates were elected to municipal councils in Brussels: Anna Hovsepyan in Jette and Tony Diran Okmen in Zaventem, following the local elections on October 13.
For Anna Hovsepyan, this victory is especially meaningful as it marks the start of her first political mandate, a personal goal she had long aspired to.
She expressed gratitude to the residents of Jette for their trust, emphasizing that their support motivates her to bring meaningful change in city hall. This achievement, she noted, strengthens her commitment to her values and inspires her to fully dedicate herself to this new role.
Before entering politics, Hovsepyan supported the “Reformist Movement” party, whose values align with her vision for a better Brussels. She highlighted the importance of innovative policies to address key issues such as mobility, education, and inequality, and said her role allows her to engage citizens and propose practical solutions. Hovsepyan received the third-highest number of votes in Jette. This result secures her a leadership position in one of the council’s sectors, a mandate she will begin on December 1.
Tony Taron Okmen, elected in Zaventem, ran on the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open VLD) list. His election adds to the growing representation of Armenians in Brussels’ municipal politics.
